Earlier in most shops it was tradition to light a lamp before either framed photographs or little statues of Gods. It was the shopkeeper's way of expressing thanks and to invoke the blessings of the Gods to bring in more business. I was in Ulsoor, one of the oldest parts of Bangalore when I came across a modern version of the old tradition. Instead of the traditional lamp, there were these fairy lights doing a disco-number inside the framed 3D figurines of Hindu Gods. New ways of thanksgiving I guess!
